Yes. All international trips require a Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of departure. Any and all additional Visas or travel documents required are the responsibility of the traveler.

It can be used not only by those entering the country from overseas but also by those returning to Japan.

What language is spoken in Japan?

The official language of Japan is standard Japanese.

Is English spoken throughout Japan?

English is taught as a second language in schools. However, do not assume every individual you meet will be able to converse in English. Many signs including the subway systems in Tokyo and Kyoto are in both Japanese and English.

What currency is used in Japan?

The currency used throughout the country is the Japanese yen. Mastercard and Visa are widely used where credit cards are accepted as payment. ATMs are commonplace in Japan.

A Visa is not required when travelling from Canada or The United States as a tourist for up to 90 days.

The best time to travel to Japan is between March and April when the short-lived cherry blossoms are in full bloom. October through November is another fantastic time to travel to Japan as the fall leaves attract just as many visitors as the spring.

Is there transportation within Japan?

The most reliable form of transportation within the country is by train as they are highly regarded as being fast, frequent, comfortable and clean.

Is Japan a family-friendly destination?

Japan is an incredibly safe and clean country. However, major cities like Tokyo and Kyoto are crowded and may be somewhat off-putting for families with very young children. Activities that the whole family can enjoy include travelling on the bullet train, experiencing Japanese cuisine and even viewing snow monkeys in Yudanaka!

A passport is the only reliable and universally accepted identification document, and it proves that you have a right to return to your country. You are strongly advised to always carry a valid passport when travelling to any foreign destination. Crossing international borders can be complicated and sometimes requires many different kinds of documents. Being prepared is the key to easing your way through this process, so make sure you know what documents you need, where to get them, and which ones will make your crossing quick and easy.

Remember to:

  • Carry a passport for all trips outside your country.
  • Be sure that your passport is still valid.
  • Check that your passport is valid for 6 months beyond your date of entry.
  • Scan a copy of your passport and email it to yourself or carry it to a separate location

  • Keep your passport safe while travelling.
  • Do not leave it unattended in your luggage, vehicle, hotel or elsewhere.
